FESTIVALS & FIESTAS
As Indonesia and its people are diverse, so it has a multitude of festivals. The dates can vary with the lunar calandar, so check before travelling. For arts festivals, check with the Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta's centre of cultural and performing arts.
January:
Galungan takes place in Bali, as a celebration of the triumph of good over evil, with lots of gamelan music, dancing and other entertainment.

February:
The Nyale Sea Festival at Lombok is a celebration which centres around the catching of sea worms, a local delicacy.
April: In Bali, Nyepi Day (Day of Silence) is marked with spiritual purification.
May: The most important day in the Buddhist calendar, Wesak Day, Buddha's birthday, is celebrated all over Indonesia.
August: In Western Sumatra, figures of winged horses with women's faces are paraded through the streets during Tabut.
September: Bull races are held in Madura, Java. In the festival of Erau, in Tenggarong, Kalimantan, Dayak tribes get together for singing, dancing, canoe races and ritual ceremonies.
December: In the Javanese festival of Kasada, gifts to the gods are thrown into the crater of Gunung Bromo.
